In the realm of interior decoration, complaints about cracking in partition walls and ceiling panels have become increasingly common. Industry experts emphasize that such issues are closely tied to design choices, material quality, and construction practices. Poor design, substandard materials, or neglecting details during installation can all contribute to the formation of cracks in these structural elements.
Cracks in walls and ceilings typically occur in three main areas: mid-sections, corners, and where the panel meets the wall. These problems often stem from the inherent properties of the materials used. Here are some key factors:
First, the material may be too brittle, with low tensile and bending strength, leading to early cracking under stress.
Second, if the material is hard but lacks impact resistance, it can crack easily, resulting in long-term durability issues.
Third, high swelling rates can cause the sheet to absorb moisture and expand, leading to warping or even full-scale cracking in severe cases.
Fourth, a high water absorption rate can weaken the joints and cause the surface finish to peel off over time.
For example, gypsum board and calcium silicate board are two commonly used materials. Gypsum board is lightweight and flexible, offering better impact resistance compared to the more rigid calcium silicate board. However, the production process of calcium silicate board—such as stacking, drying, and autoclaving—can lead to inconsistencies across different parts of the same board. Additionally, post-processing techniques like edge trimming may affect the final product’s performance, increasing the risk of cracking.
Gypsum board also stands out for its excellent thermal insulation properties, with a thermal conductivity 71% lower than that of calcium silicate board. It also has a unique ability to regulate humidity by absorbing and releasing moisture, which helps maintain a balanced indoor environment. Some advanced gypsum boards can achieve moisture content as low as 0.015% and a water absorption rate of up to 4%, making them a more stable choice for long-term use.
