In a recent incident, Mr. Wang from Maanshan City, Anhui Province, experienced a shocking event when his washing machine exploded while he was drying a down jacket. This alarming occurrence has led the local Consumer Association to issue a warning about the potential dangers of using washing machines to clean down garments.
The incident happened in February this year when Mr. Wang used his washing machine to dry a down jacket. During the drying cycle, the machine suddenly exploded. Fortunately, he wasn’t in the same room and was able to quickly check the damage. The washing machine had suffered significant internal damage, with the drum shattered and a large hole created. Although no one was injured, the event left Mr. Wang deeply shaken, especially since the machine was less than three years old.
After receiving the complaint, the Maanshan Consumers Association contacted the manufacturer, who conducted an investigation into the cause of the explosion. According to the manufacturer, the washing machine is a pulsator model, which is not designed for drying down jackets. The product lid clearly warns users that items like down jackets may not be suitable for drying due to their tendency to expand and cause issues during the spin cycle.
The association also investigated the common reasons behind such explosions. First, down jackets often have a waterproof coating, making them less breathable and prone to floating during washing. When water is trapped inside, the feathers can clump together, creating gaps that trap air. During high-speed spinning, the feathers can expand, causing pressure buildup that might lead to an explosion. Second, static electricity generated during the drying process can combine with heat, leading to sudden eruptions. Third, improper balance of the down jacket during drying can cause the drum to shake violently, potentially leading to an explosion. Lastly, issues with the washing machine itself, such as sealed sewage pipes producing biogas, could also result in an explosion under certain conditions.
Most modern washing machines can handle washing down jackets, but drying them requires caution. Non-sealed two-cylinder and pulsator models are generally not recommended for drying. Drum-style washing machines are typically safer for this purpose. If you must use a different model, placing the down jacket in a mesh bag before drying can help prevent explosions.
The Consumers Association advises consumers to pay close attention to the user manual and warning labels on both the washing machine and clothing. Key tips include reading the instructions carefully, checking care labels on clothes, removing items from pockets before washing, securing zippers and buttons, avoiding washing clothes with volatile substances, turning off the power after use, cleaning filters regularly, and maintaining the inner drum with specialized cleaning agents every six months.
This incident serves as a reminder to all consumers to be cautious and follow safety guidelines when using household appliances. Always read the manual, understand the limitations of your equipment, and take necessary precautions to avoid accidents.
