Grass coral, also known as golden sage grass coral, nine-section tea, swollen wind, and elderberry, is a valuable medicinal plant with a bitter and slightly sour taste. It possesses antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, heat-clearing, detoxifying, phlegm-reducing, and blood circulation-promoting properties. It is commonly used to treat inflammatory diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, swelling, bruises, and fractures. Due to its high medicinal value, more people are now cultivating grass coral. Here are some key tips for better cultivation:

1. Land Selection and Preparation

Choose a shaded sandy soil area in valleys, fields, or near streams. Dig the land in autumn and winter, let it weather naturally, and prepare it before planting in early spring. Select a nursery under evergreen broad-leaved forests that are moist, deep, and loose. For large-scale planting, add 2,000 kg of farm manure per acre, plow it into the soil, and create raised beds 1 meter wide.

2. Propagation Methods

Grass coral is commonly propagated through cuttings, but seeds and ramets can also be used.

(1) Cutting Propagation: In March to April, select 1-2 year-old branches from healthy plants, cut them into 10-15 cm sections, and soak the base in 0.05 ml ABT rooting powder or 1 ml/L NAA solution for 2-3 minutes. After treatment, insert the cuttings diagonally 5 cm into prepared seedbeds, leaving one section above the soil. Keep the seedbed moist and shaded. Roots usually appear within 30 days. After survival, remove weeds and apply diluted fertilizer to promote growth. Seedlings can be transplanted after 10-12 months.

(2) Seed Propagation: Harvest ripe red fruits between 10-12 months. Mix seeds with wet sand (seed:sand = 1:2), store in a dry, ventilated place for 2-3 months, then sow on seedbeds with 20 cm spacing and 2-3 cm depth. Cover with ash or fine soil and provide shade. Seedlings emerge after about 20 days. Remove grass cover and maintain regular weeding and loosening. By November or December, seedlings are ready for transplanting.

(3) Ramet Propagation: In early spring or late autumn, cut the above-ground part 10 cm from the ground and dig up the roots. Divide the rooted shoots and plant them at 20x30 cm spacing. Water regularly and keep the soil moist. This method is simple, has a high survival rate, and promotes fast growth, though it produces fewer plants per unit area.

(4) Transplanting: Transplant seedlings from November to December or February to March. Plant at 20x30 cm spacing and water thoroughly after planting. Strengthen field management once they survive.

3. Field Management

(1) After transplanting, check seedlings and replace any dead ones to ensure full coverage.

(2) Regularly weed and loosen the soil 3-4 times a year to keep the soil loose and free of weeds.

(3) Maintain proper moisture after planting. Water when dry and drain excess water during rainy seasons to prevent root rot.

(4) Apply topdressing in spring and summer with 6-7 kg of ammonium nitrate or urea per mu, along with 2-3 kg of potassium chloride. In winter, combine with soil cultivation and apply organic manure around the rhizosphere to keep the soil warm and promote growth.

(5) Grass coral thrives in shaded areas. Plant it under evergreen broad-leaved trees. In sunny areas, intercrop with tall crops like corn to provide shade. This not only supports coral growth but also increases economic returns.

4. Pest Control

Grass coral has strong resistance to pests and diseases, and no serious issues have been reported so far. However, poor shading in summer may cause leaf burn or spots. To prevent this, improve shading and use irrigation for cooling. With proper care, grass coral will thrive and remain a valuable crop for years to come.
