Grass coral, also known as golden sage grass coral, nine-section tea, swollen wind, or elderberry, is a valuable medicinal plant with a bitter and slightly cool nature. It possesses antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, heat-clearing, detoxifying, phlegm-reducing, and blood circulation-promoting properties. It is commonly used to treat inflammatory diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, swelling, sores, bruises, and fractures. Due to its high medicinal value, more people are now cultivating grass coral. To grow it successfully, the following key points should be considered:
**1. Land Selection and Preparation**
Choose shaded sandy soil areas in valleys, along field rows, or near streams and forests. In autumn or winter, dig the land and let it weather naturally. Prepare the soil before planting in early spring. Select a nursery under evergreen broad-leaved forests with moist, deep, and loose soil. For large-scale planting, mix 2,000 kilograms of organic fertilizer into each acre of land, then till and level it into raised beds that are 1 meter wide.
**2. Propagation Methods**
Grass coral can be propagated through cuttings, seeds, or ramets.
(1) **Cutting Propagation**: From March to April, select 1- to 2-year-old branches from healthy plants. Cut them into 10–15 cm sections, bundle them, and soak the base in a 0.05 ml ABT rooting powder solution or a 1 ml/liter NAA solution for 2–3 minutes. This significantly improves rooting success and survival rate. Plant the cuttings at a 45-degree angle, 5 cm deep in prepared seedbeds, leaving one node above the soil. Water thoroughly and maintain moisture. After about 30 days, roots will form, and new shoots will appear. Once established, regularly remove weeds and apply diluted manure to support growth. Seedlings can be transplanted after 10–12 months.
(2) **Seed Propagation**: Harvest ripe red fruits between 10–12 months. Mix the seeds with fine wet sand (1:2 ratio), store them in a dry, ventilated area for 2–3 months. Sow the seeds on a seedbed, spacing them 20 cm apart and planting them 2–3 cm deep. Cover with ash or fine soil, and place mulch over the surface. Shade the area and keep it moist. After 20 days, seedlings will emerge. Remove the mulch and continue weeding and loosening the soil. With proper care, they can be ready for transplanting by November or December.
(3) **Ramet Propagation**: In early spring or late autumn, cut the above-ground part of the plant 10 cm from the ground. Dig up the roots and divide them into small plants with roots. Plant them 20 cm × 30 cm apart. Keep the soil moist after planting, and water regularly until they establish. Weeding and fertilizing are essential after survival. This method is simple, has a high survival rate, and promotes fast growth, but has a lower propagation coefficient.
(4) **Transplanting**: Transplant seedlings from November to December or February to March. Space the plants 20 cm × 30 cm apart and water the roots thoroughly. Ensure proper field management once they are established.
**3. Field Management**
After transplanting, check the seedlings and replace any that have died. Regularly cultivate and weed the field 3–4 times a year to keep the soil loose and free of weeds. Maintain consistent moisture, and irrigate when dry. Drain excess water during rainy seasons to prevent root rot. Apply fertilizer once a year in spring and summer, using 6–7 kg of ammonium nitrate or urea per mu, along with 2–3 kg of potassium chloride. In winter, apply farmyard manure around the roots to provide warmth and promote growth. Intercrop with tall crops like corn in shaded areas to provide natural shade and improve economic returns.
**4. Pest Control**
Grass coral has strong resistance to pests and diseases, and no major issues have been reported. However, poor shading conditions in summer may cause leaf burn or spots. To prevent this, ensure proper irrigation, cooling, and improved shading. These measures help reduce damage and ensure healthy growth.
