In spring, the period just before and after fruit trees bloom is an ideal time for managing pests and diseases. During this season, pathogens and pests become active after a dormant phase, making them more vulnerable to pesticides. At this stage, leaves are not yet fully developed, allowing for better coverage and easier application. Also, if any phytotoxicity occurs, it can be addressed promptly with proper care.
First, pest control before flowering: Apply a 5-Baume lime sulfur solution early in the season to manage fruit tree canker, suppress winter red spider populations, and effectively control leaf curlers and scale insects. You can also use a 40% Fumex arsenic solution diluted at 100 times. After bud emergence, spray a 150–200 times dilution of 45% crystal reststone or combine a 3-Baume lime sulfur mixture with a 50% 1605 emulsifiable concentrate diluted at 1000 times. This treatment helps eliminate over 90% of red spiders and buds, while also controlling bacterial spores that cause diseases like brown spot and leaf spot, as well as aphids and other pests.
Before full bloom, apply a 50% 1605 emulsifiable concentrate diluted at 1500 times, or 80% dichlorvos at 1200–1500 times. Alternatively, use a 2500–3000 times dilution of veterinary vinegar-based insecticides. These options are effective against both pests and fungal infections.
Second, post-flower fungicide application: After blooming, continue spraying a 0.3–0.5 Baume lime sulfur solution to prevent leaf and fruit diseases, as well as red spider infestations. A 2500–3000 times dilution of a similar solution can also help control red spiders and kill eggs of leaf-feeding insects and fruit worms. Ten to fifteen days after flowering, apply a 1:4:20 Bordeaux mixture (1 kg copper sulfate, 4 kg quicklime, 20 kg clean water) or a 40% carbendazim solution diluted at 600–800 times. This helps prevent issues like defoliation, anthracnose, and brown spot, which are common during wet and hot weather. It’s important to avoid using probiotics and dichlorvos for at least one month after flowering to ensure the health of the trees and the safety of the environment.
