Led by Han Peide, a researcher at the Institute of Semiconductors, Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Photovoltaic Energy Group has been working tirelessly to meet the growing demands of the photovoltaic industry. Supported by both national vertical funding and self-raised resources, the team focused on enhancing solar cell performance through integrated technologies such as incident light reduction, surface passivation, and selective emitter design. By combining these advanced techniques with partial backside doping, they successfully developed a high-efficiency monocrystalline silicon solar cell, achieving an impressive efficiency of 20.0%. The cell's key parameters include a short-circuit current density of 43.9 mA/cm², an open-circuit voltage of 602 mV, and a fill factor of 0.758, all of which were verified by the China Institute of Metrology. As the unique "Chinese photovoltaic movement" continues to gain momentum, monocrystalline and polycrystalline silicon solar cells are expected to transition into the third generation of photovoltaic technology as defined by Martin A. Green. This next phase is characterized by photoelectric conversion efficiencies of 20% or higher, power costs below $0.5/W, and manufacturing expenses under $100/m². These improvements will ensure that traditional silicon-based solar cells maintain their dominance in the market for years to come. Therefore, increasing the efficiency of single-crystal silicon cells, establishing independent intellectual property rights, and guiding PV companies toward sustainable development have become strategically vital goals for the industry. In response to the evolving challenges within the photovoltaic sector, the research group has adopted a practical approach summarized in the "Twelve-Character Guideline": efficiency improvement, re-examination, cost reduction, and application promotion. This framework serves as a daily guide for the team, helping them align their research and development efforts with real-world industrial needs. Looking ahead, the group plans to further enhance solar cell efficiency while conducting pilot tests on existing technologies and gradually integrating them into production lines to drive broader industry adoption.
