Spring pruning of citrus trees should be carried out during the period when spring buds begin to germinate. This type of pruning primarily involves short cuts, which help reduce the decline of the main branches and their lateral shoots, as well as thin, weak branches. These cuts encourage the growth of new shoots and promote re-flowering. Additionally, large branches at the top of the canopy that have significantly deteriorated can be thinned out, typically removing 3 to 4 branches per tree. Any crossing or overlapping branches, weak fruiting mother branches, and weak fruit-bearing branches should also be removed to improve air circulation and light penetration.
Pruning should be combined with proper fertilization and pest control measures. After a rainfall, it is ideal to apply fertilizer, or you can use a quick-acting nitrogen fertilizer around the root zone before and after the emergence of new spring shoots. This helps restore the tree’s vitality, protect the leaves, and accumulate nutrients for flower bud development. However, it's important to avoid watering the trees immediately after harvesting, as this can dilute the nutrient concentration in the tree and hinder flower bud formation.
For pest control, especially against cockroaches, spraying with a 15 to 20 times diluted pine sulfur mixture, or a 0.5 to 0.8% solution of lime sulfur, or a 200 to 250 times diluted washing powder solution can be effective. Regular monitoring and timely treatment are essential to maintain the health of the citrus trees and ensure a good yield in the coming season.
