In recent discussions at the "2014 China’s Focus on Photothermal Power Generation" conference, Xu Haiwei, an engineer from the China Huaneng Group Clean Energy Technology Institute, emphasized that while there are many foreign experiences to learn from, the key to reducing the cost of Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) in China lies in its manufacturing capabilities. Whether it's solar thermal, photovoltaic, or wind energy, the future depends on how effectively China can leverage its industrial strength to cut costs. PV analysts predict that by 2020, global CSP capacity could reach around 7.1 GW, with China aiming for 300–400 MW. Although CSP isn't as hot as photovoltaics, dedicated professionals continue to push forward with innovation and development. A major focus is on using China’s manufacturing prowess to bring down the costs of solar thermal power generation. The National Energy Administration is expected to introduce a guiding electricity price for CSP this year and launch several pilot projects. This move is seen as a crucial step in creating demand and encouraging domestic manufacturers to get involved. Jose Barak, Senior Vice President of American Bright Source, expressed optimism about Chinese manufacturers. He noted that several Chinese companies are already producing high-quality mirrors for trough CSP systems, and their factories look modern and well-equipped. A recent test of a mirror produced by a Chinese manufacturer showed promising results, reinforcing the potential for collaboration. Xu Haiwei also highlighted that some Chinese firms are actively working on reducing the cost of collector tubes and developing components like molten salt pumps and electrical parts. However, he stressed that more manufacturers need to be attracted to the market through strong project initiatives. Fu Kefu from the US Renewable Energy Group pointed out that without clear projects, it's hard to attract manufacturers. “You need a project first, then equipment suppliers will follow,” he said. Standardization is another critical issue. Without industry-wide standards, mass production becomes difficult, making cost reduction challenging. Mr. Cai from Germany raised concerns about the lack of standardized specifications across different technologies. Li Wei from Shenzhen Ainengsen Technology echoed this, noting that current standards vary between companies, making large-scale production inefficient. Despite these challenges, Fu Kefu remains optimistic. He believes that as technology and the economy develop, standardization will eventually emerge, benefiting the industry. Yehuda Harats from Ener-T International mentioned that some standardization efforts are already underway in the trough sector. International cooperation and learning from foreign experiences have also become important strategies for China’s CSP industry. Vimal Kumar from Cargo Solar Power quoted an Indian proverb: “Either go to heaven or go to hell.” He emphasized that without action—building projects, investing, and studying—progress won’t happen. Experts agree that time is critical for CSP development. Fu Kefu suggested that not everything needs to be reinvented. Foreign companies have decades of experience, and China can benefit from that knowledge. Li Lan added that while Chinese companies may lack overall engineering experience, participating in international projects can help bridge that gap. Vimal Kumar shared insights from India’s CSP market, where significant cost reductions have been achieved without compromising quality. He praised China’s human resources and technical talent, suggesting that the country has a great opportunity to explore cost-saving measures. In conclusion, leveraging international experience, promoting standardization, and accelerating project development are all essential steps for China to reduce CSP costs and build a sustainable industry. As the saying goes, sometimes the best path is to learn from others and move forward together.
