Wooden furniture has always been a popular choice among consumers, offering both aesthetic appeal and durability. According to Cao Jianyu, an expert from the Tianjin Furniture Association, wooden furniture can be categorized into three main types: solid wood furniture, wood-based panel furniture, and comprehensive furniture.

Solid Wood Furniture

Solid wood furniture is typically made from natural wood materials such as sawn timber and solid wood panels. The surface is often finished with varnish, and only certain parts like the mirror back or beading may use other materials. Solid wood veneer furniture, on the other hand, uses lower-quality solid wood but covers it with a thin layer of real wood veneer. This makes it more affordable while still maintaining a wood-like appearance.

Wood-Based Panel Furniture

This type of furniture is mainly constructed using wood-based panels like MDF or particleboard. These panels are usually covered with veneer, wood grain paper, melamine, or fireproof boards. Veneer is commonly used in office and home furniture for its natural look and affordability.

Comprehensive Furniture

Comprehensive furniture combines different materials, such as solid wood and wood-based panels, along with other components. It offers a unique design that stands out from traditional solid wood or panel furniture, making it a versatile option for modern spaces.

Cao Jianyu provided five key tips for purchasing wooden furniture:

  1. Check the materials: Look at the wood grain and ensure it has a natural pattern. Tap the surface — solid wood produces a clear sound, while wood-based panels sound dull. Also, check for any strong chemical odors, which might indicate low-quality materials.
  2. Inspect the structure: Ensure the furniture is sturdy and well-constructed. For example, test a tall wardrobe by pushing its top — if it doesn’t wobble, it’s likely well-built.
  3. Evaluate the craftsmanship: High-quality furniture should have smooth finishes, even color, and tight joints. Doors and drawers should open and close smoothly without warping or gaps exceeding 2mm.
  4. Observe the environment: A good product should not emit strong or irritating smells. If there's a heavy paint-like odor, it could mean the furniture was treated with harmful chemicals.
  5. Review the labels: Always check for proper labeling and user instructions. Don’t forget to ask for the warranty or care information when purchasing.
