In the wake of the PM2.5 policy, public health concerns surged, leading to a sudden rise in demand for face masks. This shift created a booming market for mask manufacturers, with many companies capitalizing on the opportunity. Among them is Lin Yanfeng, Sales Manager at Chaomei Daily Chemical Co., Ltd., one of China's most professional mask producers. He recalls that after the policy announcement, his phone never stopped ringing. "Inquiries increased from one or two calls a day to 40 or 50, and some clients even requested 100,000 masks at once," he said. Lin was taken aback by the surge. "We had estimated daily sales of 200,000 masks in 2011, but the PM2.5 awareness led to a dramatic increase, pushing daily sales over 400,000." His company not only meets national standards but also leads in R&D. They've invested over 10 million yuan in research, collaborating with top institutions like the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Zhejiang University. Their advanced materials provide maximum protection against PM2.5 while keeping breathing resistance low—just 50 pascals compared to the national standard of over 250. However, these high-quality masks come at a steep price, often costing more than 100 yuan each. Despite the high cost, Lin emphasizes the need for affordable options. "We aim to develop masks that cost under 10 yuan and can be worn for two weeks," he said. The challenge remains to balance quality with affordability. Meanwhile, the air purification industry has also seen explosive growth. As consumer awareness of air quality increases, home appliance companies are entering the market. TCL Appliances, for instance, expanded its product line to include air purifiers, following the lead of companies like Sharp, which launched its Plasmacluster technology in China. Major brands such as Gree, Midea, and Samsung are also investing heavily in this sector. According to analysts, the air purifier market alone reached 40 billion yuan in 2010, and is expected to grow to 80 billion yuan by 2015. Beyond residential use, the industrial sector offers even greater potential. With PM2.5 monitoring just the beginning, experts predict a massive market for pollution control equipment. A provincial environmental official noted that if certain industries are found to contribute significantly to PM2.5, they will be targeted, driving demand for advanced air purification systems. Industry forecasts suggest that during the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan," the desulfurization equipment market could reach 13 billion yuan annually, while bag-type dust removal systems could hit 12 billion yuan. Siemens' China Metallurgical Technology Department General Manager, Si Yuyou, estimates that China’s exhaust gas purification market is worth hundreds of billions. As the focus on clean air intensifies, the future of the industry looks promising.
