In the wake of the PM2.5 policy, public health concerns surged, leading to a sudden rise in demand for face masks. As a result, many businesses quickly jumped on the bandwagon, offering a wide range of mask products. Among them was Chaomei Daily Chemical Co., Ltd., one of China’s most experienced mask manufacturers. Lin Yanfeng, the company’s Sales Manager, shared his experience: “As soon as the PM2.5 policy was announced, my phone wouldn’t stop ringing. Inquiries went from 1-4 calls to as many as 40-50 per day, and some clients even requested 100,000 masks at once.” Lin was taken aback by the rapid increase in demand. “We had estimated daily sales of around 200,000 units in 2011. But with the heightened awareness of PM2.5, our daily sales shot up past 400,000,” he said. The company has invested over 10 million yuan in R&D, working with top institutions like the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Zhejiang University to develop advanced materials for more effective PM2.5 protection. Their masks offer over 95% filtration efficiency while keeping breathing resistance low—just 50 pascals compared to the national standard of over 250 pascals. However, high production costs make these masks expensive, often costing more than 100 yuan each. “We need to keep developing affordable options. Ideally, a mask should cost under 10 yuan and last two weeks,” Lin added. Beyond masks, the air purification industry also saw a surge. With the growing concern over indoor air quality, home appliance companies began repositioning their products. TCL, for instance, expanded its product line to include air purifiers, while Sharp introduced its Plasmacluster technology to the Chinese market. Major brands like Gree, Midea, and Samsung also entered the space, signaling a booming industry. Analysts estimate that the air purifier market alone reached 40 billion yuan in 2010, and by 2015, the entire indoor environmental protection sector could be worth 80 billion yuan. Meanwhile, the industrial air purification market is even larger. A provincial environmental official noted that as research into PM2.5 deepens, industries contributing significantly to pollution will face stricter regulations, driving demand for advanced purification equipment. Experts predict that during the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan," the market for desulfurization equipment could reach 13 billion yuan annually, while dust removal systems may generate 12 billion yuan yearly. Siemens’ Si Yuyou also highlighted that China's air purification market could be worth hundreds of billions. As the demand for clean air continues to grow, both consumer and industrial sectors are investing heavily in solutions that protect public health and meet evolving environmental standards.
