According to a report from Taiwan's "Joint News" on October 22, Argentine scientists have discovered a groundbreaking method that captures gas released from cattle’s digestive systems and converts it into usable fuel. This innovation could help reduce greenhouse gas emissions linked to global warming.
The technology, developed by the Argentine National Agricultural Institute, involves using valves and pumping systems to channel the gas from a cow’s digestive tract into a container. Once collected, the methane is separated from other gases like carbon dioxide and compressed into natural gas. This process not only makes the gas usable as an energy source but also significantly reduces its environmental impact.
Scientists estimate that ruminants such as cows and sheep produce between 250 to 300 liters of pure methane daily through belching and flatulence. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to ozone layer depletion and climate change. Its warming effect is about 23 times stronger than that of carbon dioxide.
Argentina, one of the world’s top beef exporters, has approximately 51 million cows. According to data from the National Agricultural Institute, the gas emitted by these animals accounts for 30% of the country’s total greenhouse gas emissions. By capturing and utilizing this methane, Argentina could make a significant contribution to global efforts in reducing climate change.
This breakthrough not only highlights the potential of waste-to-energy solutions but also opens up new possibilities for sustainable farming practices worldwide.
