According to a report by Taiwan's "Joint News" on October 22, researchers in Argentina have developed a groundbreaking method to convert the gas produced by cattle into usable fuel, potentially reducing harmful greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming.
The technology, created by the Argentine National Agricultural Institute, involves using valves and pumping systems to collect the digestive gases from cows and transport them through tubes into containers. Once collected, the methane is separated from other gases like carbon dioxide and compressed into natural gas, making it a viable energy source.
Scientists explain that ruminants such as cows and sheep release between 250 to 300 liters of pure methane daily through belching and flatulence. Methane is not only a potent greenhouse gas but also contributes to the depletion of the ozone layer, significantly accelerating climate change.
Argentina, one of the top beef exporters globally, has approximately 51 million cows. According to data from the National Agricultural Institute, the methane emissions from these animals account for about 30% of the country’s total greenhouse gas emissions. Methane is 23 times more effective at trapping heat than carbon dioxide, making it a major contributor to the greenhouse effect.
This innovative approach could offer a sustainable solution, turning what was once considered waste into a valuable resource while helping to combat climate change.
