China's graphite industry tightens energy saving and environmental protection

The reporter learned from the Environmental Protection Department of Heilongjiang Province on April 2 that the province has introduced six key measures aimed at addressing graphite-related environmental pollution. These initiatives focus on resource optimization, industrial upgrading, extending the supply chain, improving access standards, and enhancing tailings management. The goal is to promote sustainable development and create a "green mine" model in the region. Heilongjiang is one of China’s largest graphite-producing provinces, with Jixi and Hegang being particularly rich in graphite reserves. Jixi alone holds over 850 million tons of graphite, accounting for 57% of the province's total and 38% of the country's reserves. This makes pollution control in the graphite industry a top priority for the region. According to officials, the graphite industry has long struggled with environmental issues such as dust emissions, smoke, and tailings disposal. These problems are exacerbated by low industry barriers, outdated technology, and insufficient regulation. Many mining sites are abandoned or poorly managed, leading to soil and water contamination, which threatens both the environment and local communities. In response, the provincial government has been working closely with enterprises to implement stricter environmental standards. For example, the 2012 "Graphite Industry Access Standards" set clear requirements, including dust suppression systems and environmental impact assessments. Cities like Jixi have also taken steps to improve production efficiency and promote clean manufacturing practices. Several companies have already begun implementing these changes. Xu Shu, general manager of Jixi Fuxiang Graphite Co., Ltd., shared that his company has invested heavily in new equipment and technologies to reduce dust and soot emissions. They have added five new dust collection systems and plan to install two more soon. Regarding tailings management, they use a closed-loop system to recycle water, significantly reducing environmental impact. Another major player, Heilongjiang Aoyu Graphite Group, has integrated mining and deep processing, even producing eco-friendly building materials from tailings. Han Yufeng, chairman of the group, emphasized the importance of resource integration and sustainable development, supporting the province's six measures as a step toward greener practices. While progress is being made, some companies still face challenges. Han Yufeng suggested stricter controls on high-pollution, low-efficiency mines, while Xu Shu called for better support for small businesses, including more affordable dust removal solutions. He highlighted the need for simpler and more cost-effective technologies to help smaller enterprises meet environmental standards. The six measures outlined by the province include: increasing resource integration, accelerating technological upgrades, expanding the industrial chain, improving access regulations, strengthening tailings management, and promoting green mine development. These efforts aim to ensure long-term sustainability, protect the environment, and support the growth of the graphite industry in a responsible way.
