China's graphite industry tightens energy saving and environmental protection

The reporter learned from the Environmental Protection Department of Heilongjiang Province on April 2 that the province has introduced six key measures aimed at addressing environmental pollution caused by graphite mining and processing. These measures focus on resource optimization, industrial upgrading, extended value chains, improved access standards, enhanced tailings management, and the creation of green mines. The goal is to ensure sustainable development while reducing environmental impact. Heilongjiang is one of China's major graphite-producing provinces, with Jixi and Hegang being particularly rich in resources. Jixi alone holds 850 million tons of graphite reserves, making up 57% of the province’s total and 38% of the national reserve. This significant share places a heavy responsibility on Heilongjiang to manage its graphite industry effectively and sustainably. According to officials, the graphite industry has long faced challenges such as low technical standards, weak environmental regulations, and improper waste disposal. Dust, smoke, and tailings are the primary sources of pollution, often leading to land degradation, water contamination, and ecological damage. In response, local governments and enterprises have been working together to adopt cleaner technologies and improve environmental practices. Several companies have already taken proactive steps. For instance, Jixi Fuxiang Graphite Co., Ltd. has invested heavily in dust control equipment, significantly improving air quality. They also use a closed-loop system for tailings water, reducing environmental impact. Similarly, Heilongjiang Aoyu Graphite Group has integrated resource utilization and deep processing, producing eco-friendly products like energy-saving bricks from mine waste. Industry leaders believe that while progress has been made, more needs to be done. Suggestions include stricter resource controls, better policy support for small and medium-sized enterprises, and the development of affordable dust removal systems. Some companies still face challenges, such as outdated permits and high operational costs, which hinder their ability to meet environmental standards. The six new measures aim to bring about lasting change. They include integrating graphite resources, accelerating industrial upgrades, extending the supply chain, strengthening access controls, managing tailings safely, and promoting green mining practices. These steps are expected to create a more sustainable and environmentally friendly graphite industry in Heilongjiang. By implementing these strategies, the province aims to not only reduce pollution but also boost economic efficiency and long-term environmental health. With continued efforts and collaboration between government and industry, Heilongjiang is setting an example for responsible graphite development across China.
