In the Shiqiao area of Hangzhou, Caijiahe is not widely known outside the region, but it has gained local notoriety due to its severely polluted river. Recently, the Xicheng District Riverway Supervision Center made a bold move by introducing a new water purification system into the Caijiahe River. According to officials, this initiative is expected to improve the water quality from Class V to Class IV within two months.
The river runs alongside farmhouses, and the main causes of pollution include direct discharge of domestic sewage, surface runoff, and agricultural runoff. These factors have led to high levels of ammonia nitrogen, eutrophication, and low oxygen levels in the water, turning Caijiahe into a "black and smelly river."
What was introduced yesterday is a type of biomimetic aquatic plant designed to clean the water naturally. This innovative system mimics the function of real plants to purify the river. At the top of the device is a solar panel that converts sunlight into electricity, which then powers an aeration system to increase dissolved oxygen levels in the water. Below the solar panel, a floating platform holds a structure resembling aquatic grass, where biofilms containing beneficial microorganisms are attached. These microorganisms help break down organic pollutants in the water, promoting better water quality over time.
Caijiahe is one of 30 rivers designated as "Black Rivers" in Hangzhou in 2013. The section from Xinhui Street to Shiqiao will be the first pilot project for this bionic water plant technology in Zhejiang Province. The experimental stretch is approximately 400 meters long, and around 200 units of the biomimetic plants will be deployed along the river.
To test the effectiveness of the system, the manufacturer conducted experiments using water samples from Caijiahe. In a controlled environment, one unit of the biomimetic plant—covering one square meter—was placed in 18 cubic meters of water. Within just two weeks, the water clarity improved from about 30 centimeters to nearly 2 meters, and the water quality upgraded from inferior Class V to Class IV.
According to Yan Gaogong from the Urban River Monitoring Center, while the use of these biomimetic plants is promising, other measures such as dredging and ecological restoration are also essential for long-term improvement. Additionally, consistent maintenance and cleaning by workers are crucial to sustaining the progress. As of late August, 18 out of the 30 rivers designated for cleanup this year in Hangzhou have already passed their inspection phase.
