Hangzhou Sewage Favorable Solar Bionic Water Grass

Caijiahe may not be a well-known river in Hangzhou, but it has gained local notoriety for being one of the "black and smelly rivers" in the Shiqiao area. Recently, the Xicheng District Riverway Supervision Center made a move to address this issue by introducing a new technology into the river. According to reports, after two months, the water quality is expected to improve from the fifth to the fourth category.
The banks of Caijiahe are lined with farmhouses, and the main problem comes from domestic sewage directly flowing into the river, along with surface runoff. This has led to high levels of ammonia nitrogen, causing eutrophication and oxygen depletion in the water, turning it into a polluted waterway that many locals avoid.
What was placed in the river yesterday is a type of biomimetic aquatic plant designed to purify the water. The top part of the device is a solar panel that converts sunlight into electricity, which then powers an aeration system to increase the dissolved oxygen in the water. Below the solar panel, a floating plastic platform holds a structure resembling aquatic plants. Microorganisms attached to this carrier help break down organic pollutants in the water, improving its overall quality.
Caijiahe is one of the 30 rivers designated as "black rivers" in Hangzhou in 2013. The section between Xinhui Street and Shiqiao will be the first pilot project in Zhejiang Province using these biomimetic plants. It's estimated that this stretch will be about 400 meters long, with 200 units of the devices installed.
To test the effectiveness of the technology, the manufacturer conducted experiments using water samples from Caijiahe. In a controlled setting, a single unit covering one square meter was placed in 18 cubic meters of water. After just two weeks, the water clarity improved from around 30 centimeters to nearly 2 meters, and the water quality upgraded from the fifth to the fourth category.
According to Yan Gaogong from the Urban River Monitoring Center, while the use of biomimetic plants is a key step, other measures such as dredging and ecological restoration are also necessary. Long-term maintenance and regular cleaning by workers will be essential for sustained improvement. As of late August, 18 out of the 30 rivers targeted for cleanup this year have already passed inspection.
