Summary of Stone Fixing Methods

1. Waxing

Advantages: Waxing is a simple and straightforward method for coloring and fixing stones, and it can also enhance the stone's shine.

Disadvantages:

(1) The bonding effect is weak. If you use a cloth or paper to wipe forcefully, the color may easily be removed, making the finish less durable.

(2) Waxing can damage the stone itself. Solid wax often contains color-changing compounds that react under UV light, causing discoloration—especially in light-colored stones. Additionally, wax can trap dirt, leading to difficult-to-remove stains within the stone’s pores.

(3) It increases the surface slipperiness, which poses a risk of slips and falls.

(4) The impact of pigments and dyes on human health and the environment is complex. It’s advisable to use this method cautiously, especially for stones that tend to fade quickly.

2. Film Coating

Method: There are two common techniques—sealing the film after dyeing, or mixing pigments with resin to form a protective layer on the stone’s surface.

Advantages: Offers strong adhesion and resistance to fading when wiped with water. It significantly improves the stone’s gloss and appearance.

Disadvantages:

(1) Resin has low hardness and is not very wear-resistant, making the surface prone to scratches that affect its look.

(2) Resin can also discolor over time, sometimes unevenly, which affects the aesthetic appeal.

(3) The resin may age and peel off, and removing it from the stone is very challenging.

(4) Sealing the stone with resin can interfere with its natural "breathing" process, potentially leading to internal damage or structural issues over time.

3. Crystal Glaze Fixing

Method: After dyeing, any excess pigment is wiped away, then crystal glaze is applied and polished to create a smooth, glossy finish.

Advantages:

(1) Crystal glaze has high hardness and excellent wear resistance. It produces a mirror-like surface with a clear, natural appearance, resembling high-quality stone.

(2) It provides long-lasting color retention, even when scrubbed hard. The glaze does not change color and includes UV absorbers that help preserve the stone’s color for longer.

(3) It enhances brightness significantly, with gloss readings reaching up to 90–100.

(4) The treated surface offers anti-slip and anti-staining properties, adding functional benefits to the stone.

(5) Made from water-based, non-toxic materials, it is safe, odorless, and environmentally friendly.

Disadvantages: This method is more expensive than waxing, but the results are far superior in terms of durability and aesthetics.
