China is steadily advancing the development of shale gas, with increasing attention and investment from both the government and industry. Organized by the China International Petroleum and Petrochemical Technology and Equipment Exhibition Organizing Committee — the world's largest oil exhibition — the "2012 China Shale Gas Development Forum" will take place on December 3rd at the Beijing National Convention Center. This event has drawn participation from key national agencies, including the National Energy Administration, the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Land and Resources, and the Ministry of Science and Technology. The forum aims to provide a high-level platform for policy interpretation and market insight, bringing together decision-makers, industry leaders, and technical experts. Notably, academicians from both the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering will lead discussions, alongside top domestic professionals and executives from leading U.S. companies involved in shale gas development. The event will focus on sharing experiences and lessons learned from the U.S. shale gas boom, as well as exploring the commercialization and industrialization of this energy source in China. Experts from major energy firms such as CNPC, Sinopec, CNOOC, and Yanchang Oilfield will highlight the potential of shale gas resources, along with their technology and equipment requirements. Representatives from key government departments will also outline national policies, progress, and research plans aimed at accelerating shale gas development. In addition, the forum will address topics like the benefits of shale gas development, opportunities for private enterprises in the evolving energy landscape, and the current status of shale gas bidding. With over 400,000 oil and gas wells already drilled across dozens of fields in China, the discussion will also focus on how to repurpose these existing wells for shale gas exploration. Experts will explore ways to tap into this underutilized resource and advocate for more supportive local policies and regulatory frameworks. This emphasis on policy support and implementation mechanisms marks a new level of engagement compared to previous similar events.
