Many people turn to simple and widely available noise-canceling earplugs in an effort to fall asleep faster. These earplugs are made of soft, elastic material that can be compressed by hand before being inserted into the ear canal. Once inside, they gradually expand and create a snug fit, effectively blocking out external noise.

While these earplugs work well for short-term use, many users report that after some time, the sensation of fullness or pressure disappears. "At first, the earplugs would feel tight and block the ear canal, but now I don’t even notice them," one person shared.

According to Dr. Zhou Feng, a senior physician at Tongji Guanghua Hospital in Dongguan City, while such earplugs may offer temporary relief from noise, long-term use could have potential risks. The extent of the impact depends on two main factors.

"First, it’s important to check if the earplugs are causing significant pressure on the ear canal," Zhou explained. "If you experience persistent discomfort or pain, it could indicate that the ear canal is being compressed for too long." He added that the ear canal is relatively thin and lacks fatty tissue to cushion the pressure. Prolonged compression could lead to reduced blood flow, potentially damaging the nerves.

The second factor involves hygiene. If not cleaned properly, earplugs can become a breeding ground for bacteria, increasing the risk of ear infections. Dr. Zhou also advised against using these earplugs during situations with rapid changes in air pressure, such as during air travel or swimming, as this could cause additional strain on the ears.

In summary, while noise-canceling earplugs are convenient and effective for occasional use, regular or extended use should be approached with caution to avoid possible long-term complications.
