Hardware main classification and purchase skills
Hardware products are typically classified into common and special hardware based on their functions. Common hardware is further divided into hinge rails, decorative handles, and decorative locks depending on their installation method. Special hardware includes bathroom hardware and kitchen pendant hardware, also based on how they are installed.
When purchasing hardware accessories, it's important to choose hinges, slide rails, and locks that offer good sealing performance. Look for locks with smooth operation and high flexibility. A simple test is to insert and remove the key several times to check if the mechanism moves smoothly. Also, select a variety of decorative hardware with an attractive appearance and reliable performance to enhance both aesthetics and functionality.
1. Skirting Board
Skirting boards are often overlooked but play a crucial role in protecting the base of cabinets. Since they are close to the floor, moisture can cause them to swell or mold. There are two main types: wooden skirting boards and matte metal skirting boards. Wooden skirting boards are usually made from leftover wood scraps, making them cost-effective. However, due to their proximity to the ground, they are more prone to water absorption, which can lead to damage over time and potentially affect the entire cabinet structure.
2. Drawer Slides
Drawer slides come in two- or three-piece configurations. When selecting, pay attention to the finish, plating quality, and the gap between the wheels. The load-bearing wheels should be evenly worn and rotate smoothly to ensure quiet and easy drawer movement. Choosing high-quality slides enhances both the durability and user experience of your furniture.
3. Steel Inserts
Steel inserts used in cutlery and fork systems are precise, standardized, and easy to clean. They resist deformation and are resistant to pollution, making them essential for maintaining the functionality and longevity of kitchen cabinet drawers. These components are widely used by leading kitchen cabinet manufacturers in Germany, the U.S., and Japan. When inspecting a kitchen cabinet, open each drawer to see if it uses steel inserts and knife/fork combinations—this indicates higher quality and better construction.
4. Handles
Handles are available in various materials such as zinc alloy, copper, aluminum, stainless steel, plastic, wood, and ceramics. They come in a wide range of shapes and colors to match different furniture styles. Electroplated or electrostatically painted handles offer wear resistance and corrosion protection. In addition to matching the room’s decor, they should be strong enough to withstand heavy pulling forces. Ideally, handles should support at least 6 kg of force without breaking or loosening.
5. Hinges
Hinge hardware includes door hinges, drawer guides, and cabinet hinges. Door hinges are commonly made from copper or stainless steel. Standard single-piece hinges measure 10cm x 3cm or 10cm x 4cm, with a shaft diameter ranging from 1.1cm to 1.3cm and a wall thickness of 2.5mm to 3mm. When choosing hinges, ensure they open smoothly without noise. It's preferable to select those with ball bearings in the shaft for improved performance and longevity.
6. Hinged Cabinet Doors
Cabinet hinges are available in detachable and non-detachable types, with cover positions categorized as large bend, medium bend, or straight bend. The medium bend is the most commonly used. In addition to checking the surface smoothness, pay attention to the spring’s reset function. A well-made hinge should open to 95 degrees and maintain stability when pressed from both sides. If the spring remains intact and strong, it’s a sign of a high-quality product.
