Hardware main classification and purchase skills
Hardware products are typically categorized into general and specialized hardware based on their function. General hardware is further divided into hinge rails, decorative handles, and decorative locks depending on their installation method. Specialized hardware includes bathroom hardware and kitchen hangers, also classified by installation type.
When purchasing hardware accessories, it's essential to choose hinges, slide rails, and locks with excellent sealing properties. Opt for locks that offer smooth operation and strong performance. A simple test is to insert and remove the key several times to check for any resistance or stiffness. Select decorative hardware that has an attractive appearance and reliable functionality, ensuring both aesthetics and durability.
1. Skirting Board
Skirting boards are often overlooked, yet they play a crucial role in protecting the base of kitchen cabinets. Being closest to the floor, they are vulnerable to moisture, which can cause swelling or mold. There are two main types: wooden skirting boards and matte metal ones. Wooden skirting boards are commonly made from leftover wood scraps, making them cost-effective. However, due to their proximity to the ground, they are prone to absorbing moisture, which can lead to damage over time.
2. Drawer Slides
Drawer slides come in two and three-piece designs. When selecting, pay attention to the finish and plating quality, as well as the gap and strength of the load-bearing wheels. Choose slides with evenly worn and smoothly rotating wheels for better flexibility and reduced noise during use.
3. Steel Cutlery
Steel cutlery and drawer organizers are precise, standardized, easy to clean, and resistant to deformation. They are widely used in European and American kitchen cabinet systems. If you notice steel cutlery and fork combinations inside the drawers, it’s a sign of higher-quality construction. These components ensure a more standardized and durable cabinet system.
4. Handles
Handles are available in various materials such as zinc alloy, copper, aluminum, stainless steel, plastic, wood, and ceramics. They come in different shapes and colors to match various furniture styles. Electroplated or electrostatically painted handles offer enhanced wear and corrosion resistance. In addition to aesthetic appeal, they should be able to withstand significant pulling force—ideally over 6 kg.
5. Hinges
Hinges include door hinges, drawer guides, and cabinet hinges. Door hinges are commonly made from copper or stainless steel. Standard single-piece hinges measure 10cm x 3cm or 10cm x 4cm, with a central shaft diameter between 1.1cm and 1.3cm and a wall thickness of 2.5mm to 3mm. High-quality hinges operate smoothly without noise and ideally feature a ball bearing in the shaft for added durability.
6. Hinged Cabinet Doors
Hinges are available in detachable and non-detachable types. The cover position comes in large, medium, and straight bends, with the medium bend being the most common. Besides checking the surface smoothness, pay attention to the spring reset performance. A good hinge should open up to 95 degrees and remain stable when pressed from both sides, indicating strong and reliable construction.
