As one of its key components, the armature bearing is essential for ensuring smooth and efficient operation. These bearings are subjected to high loads, and their size is constrained by factors such as wheel diameter and the internal space between the wheels. Therefore, they must be compact yet capable of operating at high speeds.
In single-side drive systems, the armature bearing typically uses a double-support configuration. The gear end is usually a floating support, while the commutator end serves as a fixed support. The bearing near the gear experiences the highest load and is considered the critical component in the armature system. To reduce this load, cylindrical roller bearings without inner ring ribs (NU type) are commonly used. On the commutator side, bearings with inner ring ribs and a flat retaining ring (NUP type) are often chosen, especially in international applications.
When the motor power is high, using a single-side drive may lead to excessive bearing load at the gear end, making it difficult to find bearings that can handle both dynamic load and speed requirements. In such cases, a dual-side drive system is more appropriate. This method allows the use of helical gears, which have balanced helix angles and opposite rotation directions, resulting in smoother operation without axial forces. For this setup, NU-type cylindrical roller bearings without inner ring ribs are suitable. If spur gears are used instead, bearings that can manage axial forces, such as NJ-type cylindrical roller bearings with a single inner ring rib, are typically selected.
