Traction Motor Armature Bearing

The traction motor is a critical component in the power transmission system of electric locomotives and diesel-electric locomotives. The armature bearing plays a vital role in ensuring smooth operation and efficient power transfer. Due to the heavy loads it bears and the space constraints imposed by the wheel diameter and the inner clearance between wheels, these bearings must be compact yet capable of high-speed performance. In single-side drive configurations, the armature bearing typically uses a double-support system. The gear output end is usually a floating support, while the commutator end is a fixed support. The bearing at the gear end experiences the highest load and is the most critical part of the armature. To reduce this load, cylindrical roller bearings without inner ring flanges (type NU) are commonly used. At the commutator end, bearings with inner ring flanges and flat retainers (NUP type) are often employed, especially in international applications. When the motor power is high, using a single-side drive may result in excessive bearing load at the gear end, making it challenging to select bearings that can handle both dynamic load and high-speed requirements. In such cases, a dual-side drive system is preferred. This configuration allows for the use of helical gears, which provide smoother operation and eliminate axial forces due to their opposing helix angles. For dual-side drives, cylindrical roller bearings without inner ring flanges (NU type) are suitable. If spur gears are used instead, bearings capable of handling axial forces, such as NJ type cylindrical roller bearings with a single inner ring rib, are typically chosen.
