In a significant development, the detection of "drainage oil" has become a global concern. On the 15th, Sichuan introduced ten "quick oil multi-parameter comprehensive rapid screening kits," enabling the identification of "drainage oil" in under 10 minutes. Currently, this method is being tested in a "test paper" format. Once fully developed, it could be a major blow to those producing "ditch oil." During an experiment, two bottles of genuine and fake "garbage oil" were presented to over a dozen experts who rely on visual inspection and taste, but none could distinguish between them. After 20 minutes, a real cooking oil sample was identified using an instrument. The same day, ten "multi-parameter comprehensive quick screening kits for cooking oil" were unveiled in Sichuan, set to be integrated into the provincial food and drug surveillance system, as well as in cities like Mianyang and Deyang. This marks the first time such a kit has been introduced into the national food and drug monitoring system. The debut of these kits has sparked interest, as they can detect "yin and yang" oil in less than 10 minutes. On the morning of the 15th, the Sichuan Food and Drug Administration conducted a training session on detecting drainage oil. In the class, ten sets of rapid screening instruments for "oil production" were demonstrated. Reporter Liu Yiyi tested two samples: one was edible oil mixed with drainage oil, and the other was regular edible oil. Most people, including food and drug inspection experts, couldn’t tell the difference at first. According to Ms. Yin from the Ganzhou Food and Drug Inspection Institute, the source of cooking oil is complex, often mixed with various ingredients, some processed through washing, distillation, decolorization, or blending with edible vegetable oils. This makes sensory analysis and physical and chemical indicators ineffective. Liu Yiyi then took 9 drops from each bottle and added them to a square glass tube, shaking vigorously before placing it in boiling water. The color of the oils gradually changed, with one turning red. After 10 minutes, he calibrated the glass tube with pure water using the instrument. Then, both tubes were placed back in the boiling water. One showed the word "Yang," indicating waste oil, while the other showed "Yin." The key to detecting drainage oil lies in identifying "polar markers." As explained by Professor Sang Huachun from China Agricultural University, drainage oil, often repeatedly fried or heated at high temperatures, produces substances that are hard to remove even after refining. These are called "polar markers," and the instrument detects them to identify waste oil. "The polar marker reacts with the reagent and turns red. The higher the content, the darker the color. If it exceeds the threshold, it’s positive," said Sang Huachun. He noted that the kit, named "Multi-parameter comprehensive quick screening kit for waste oil," was among seven effective methods identified by the Ministry of Health last year. Liu Yiyi mentioned that the development involved tens of thousands of experiments. The instrument now costs around 21,000 yuan. Meanwhile, smaller packages using the same principle have been marketed for about 200 yuan, allowing results to be obtained within half an hour. However, Sang Huachun admitted that small packages may lack the stability and consistency of the full instrument, as users must visually judge the color after heating. A more convenient test strip version has also been in development for six months. Sang Huachun said, "Once the technical challenge is overcome, the test strip will be available on the market for around 20 yuan." Currently, the kits are used only for preliminary screening. If suspected drainage oil is found, further investigation is required. The Provincial Food and Drug Administration emphasized that the results cannot be used directly for punishment due to the lack of a uniform standard. The kits are now being deployed in Sichuan's Food and Drug Administration and several cities across the province. This marks the first appearance of the technology in the national food and drug system.
