Laser wireless charger that can be used in the room was successfully developed

Wireless charging may soon be realized. Researchers at the University of Washington (UW) have developed a way to use a laser to safely charge their mobile phones.

In other words, you don't need to insert any cable, just charge it through the room's laser transmitter. The research team hopes that this technology can be widely used. In the future, whether it is a mobile phone, a computer, or a camera, wireless charging can be realized.

This new technology marks the first realization of laser charging smart phones.

The invisible narrow beam that charges the phone can charge the phone in the room, and researchers say it can be charged as fast as a traditional USB port.

The research team's report wrote: "To achieve the goal of charging, the research team installed a thin battery behind the smartphone and then used a laser to charge it."

"In addition, the team's custom-designed security features include a metal plate heatsink on the smartphone to eliminate excess heat generated by the laser, as well as a reflector-based mechanism that turns off the path of the laser's charging beam when personnel attempt to move."

Research author Shyam Gollakota said that safety is the top priority, and the UW team was designed with it in mind.

Gollakota said: "We have designed, built and tested this laser-based charging system with a fast-response safety mechanism to ensure that the laser emitter terminates the charging beam before people enter the laser channel."

The author, Arka Majumdar, said that the security mechanism implemented by the team in the study applies to various environments such as home and office.

The charge is transmitted by a thin electron beam of 2W power – from up to about 14 feet away – to 15 square inches.

However, the scope can be adjusted. The report states: "The transmitter can be modified to extend the radius of the charging beam from a distance of nearly 40 feet to 100 square centimeters."

"This expansion means that the transmitter can target a wider charging surface, such as a counter or a desktop, and the phone can be charged anywhere on this surface."

At the same time, the research team explained that smart phones emit high-frequency “squeak” signals, but we do not interfere with charging. "Our ears can't hear these sounds, but for the small microphone on the laser transmitter, it's sensitive to this sound."

Vikram Iyer explained: "This kind of sound localization system ensures that the transmitter can detect that the user has set a smart phone on the charging surface, whether you are on the table or elsewhere."
