Three ways to decorate the wall with marble
Using marble to decorate walls can certainly create a luxurious and cool aesthetic, but it's important to choose the right installation method. If not done properly, the weight of the marble could cause it to fall off, which can be dangerous. There are generally three common techniques for installing marble on walls:
The first method is dry hanging. This involves fixing bolts into the wall first, then cutting grooves in the stone and securing it with a T-shaped frame. The T-frame is then attached to the bolts, creating a gap between the stone and the wall. This method ensures a strong and stable installation. It's ideal if the bathroom has enough space and structural support, making it a preferred choice for many.
The second method is wet bonding. In this approach, a layer of steel mesh is first applied to the wall, followed by a layer of mortar or concrete. This technique offers good adhesion, but it's more labor-intensive and requires careful preparation to ensure the marble stays in place over time.
The third option is direct pasting, which is simpler and often used for thinner marble slabs. It comes in two forms: point bonding and full coverage. Full coverage is suitable for thin stones (less than 8mm thick) that weigh similarly to regular wall tiles. These can be attached using special adhesive mortar. Point bonding, on the other hand, uses specialized stone glue, with dots spaced no more than 25cm apart. Each dot should be at least 3–4cm in size, and the adhesive layer should be more than 0.5cm thick. This method works well for slightly thicker stone. However, direct pasting is not recommended for bathrooms due to the risk of moisture and structural movement. Bathrooms typically have lightweight walls that can expand or contract, and frequent exposure to water can cause the adhesive to degrade over time, leading to potential hazards.
