Outdoor furniture is becoming increasingly popular among consumers. A recent survey of furniture retailers nationwide shows that this trend is growing, as outdoor furniture has consistently remained in demand, complements existing interior styles, and fills market gaps created by the closure of events and retail spaces. "Some people called me in December last year asking for my opinion," Johansen said. "I told them it was too late, but they didn’t believe me. I explained that they should book at least a year in advance." Many consumers are seeking to extend their living spaces beyond the four walls of their homes, which is why Weekends Only Furniture, based in St. Louis, has shifted its strategy. The retailer recently announced that five of its stores will introduce outdoor furniture for the first time this spring. Johansen noted that regional and cultural factors significantly influence demand. Residents in the U.S. Midwest enjoy outdoor leisure activities during spring and summer, and when they have free time, they often spend it outside, even shoveling snow in winter. This season, HOM Furniture will launch Seasonal Concepts Galleries in 13 of its Minnesota locations. "It boosts store transaction volume, which is one of the advantages of the seasonal industry," Johansen said. "In the summer, people prefer being outdoors rather than indoors. Indoor furniture sales tend to decline and then recover in autumn. Outdoor products provide us with a steady revenue stream." Koenig from City Furniture mentioned that the company will introduce a full range of outdoor furniture, sourcing frames from Asia and producing cushions in its Mississippi factory. City Furniture will focus on marketing and promotional efforts. Even though Florida doesn't experience the same harsh winters as Minnesota or the Pacific Northwest, City Furniture has decided to ramp up its promotion of outdoor collections this season. The company operates 24 City Furniture and Ashley HomeStore locations in southern Florida. Jordan’s outdoor furniture has also been well-received by customers. With three stores in Massachusetts and one in Rhode Island, Jordan’s is entering its second season of offering outdoor furniture. Each store has dedicated space to display these seasonal items, with prices ranging from mid-range to high-end. Selden’s Home Furnishings in Tacoma, Washington, started selling outdoor furniture three years ago. Every March or whenever the seasons change, they dedicate 4,500 square feet of space near the front entrance. Allison Hupp, a public relations representative from an indoor furniture retailer on Madison Avenue in New York, said SUITE New York has expanded its outdoor furniture collection. She cited high demand from the Hamptons and the increasing number of apartments with terraces in New York City. Retailers have introduced more outdoor furniture than expected. Mark Weinberger, president of Weinberger’s Furniture in Augusta, Georgia, confirmed that his company’s stores in Lake Oconee and Augusta have added outdoor furniture lines. Weinberger noted that although the Lake Oconee location is smaller, outdoor furniture sales remain strong throughout the year, as residents there embrace a relaxed lifestyle.
