The "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" for renewable energy development highlights the promising future of Concentrated Solar Power (CSP). By 2015, CSP is expected to reach an annual installed capacity of 1 million kilowatts, with the solar thermal power market projected to grow to 15 billion yuan within five years. Looking ahead, over the next decade, large-scale commercialization of solar thermal power is anticipated, potentially drawing over 100 billion yuan in total investment.
On July 1, 2010, Asia’s first tower-type solar thermal power station was completed in Yanqing, Beijing. Developed jointly by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Huang Ming Solar, and Huadian Group, the project cost 120 million yuan and had a power generation capacity of 1 MW. It served as a demonstration project. Xi Wenhua, deputy director of the China Renewable Energy Society, noted that this was the largest experimental project in China and a successful example of CSP technology.
Huang Ming Solar, involved in the Beijing project, also built a 2-MW solar trough power plant in Sun Valley, Texas. Additionally, the company is closely following a 1,000-MW solar thermal project in Golmud, Qinghai. In the following year, Ningxia Hanas New Energy Group invested 2.25 billion yuan to build Asia’s first Integrated Solar Combined Cycle (ISCC) power station in Ningxia, with a planned capacity of 92.5 MW, set to begin operations in October 2013.
China Haiyang (430065) launched a mirror project for solar thermal power in Chengdu, with the first phase costing 500 million yuan. Meanwhile, the China Power Investment Group has a 100-MW demonstration project in Golmud, Qinghai, with a total investment of 3.1 billion yuan.
According to reports, Guodian Group and Green Energy Group have started working on Direct Normal Irradiance (DNI) projects. China Huadian Corporation and AVIC General Aircraft Co., Ltd. have also signed a strategic cooperation agreement in Inner Mongolia for CSP development.
From the Energy Bureau of Haixi Prefecture, Qinghai Province, it was revealed that Delingha is actively pursuing CSP projects. In addition to the existing 10-MW project by China Solar, Guangdong Nuclear Power's 50-MW trough power project has received approval from the Provincial Development and Reform Commission. Huaneng and Guodian are also applying for CSP projects.
Hangzhou Guocai Co., Ltd. and Hangzhou Steam Turbine B Co., Ltd. are involved in CSP projects, providing necessary equipment. Sanhua Co., Ltd. has invested nearly 20 million U.S. dollars in Israel’s HF, holding 31% of its shares in the solar thermal sector. The first flight of energy-saving is establishing a light and heat company to enter the solar thermal field.
Local governments are increasingly recognizing the potential of CSP. Yan Bingwu, head of the committee, emphasized the need for local processing and manufacturing of solar materials, suggesting government support to stimulate local enterprises.
In Delingha, where fiscal resources are limited, the local government aims to optimize the industrial structure through solar thermal development. A new energy industrial park covering 200 square kilometers is being developed, with 46 square kilometers dedicated to solar thermal energy.
Yi Daixin mentioned that the local government is reserving land to attract supporting companies for photovoltaic and thermal energy projects. However, Xi Wenhua remains cautious, noting that only a small number of CSP projects have been successfully built and operated.
Despite the challenges, the prospects for CSP remain bright. Equipment manufacturers stand to benefit from the growing industry. Companies like Qinghai Solar have established a complete supply chain, including solar control systems, boilers, turbines, heliostats, and transmission components.
With the completion of the first commercial CSP plant in China, related industries are expected to see significant growth, driving high-tech sectors such as software, glass, communications, construction materials, and more.
