SpriForm's production process combines a continuous fiber-reinforced thermoplastic sheet (called "organic sheet") thermoforming process and injection molding process. The sheet used is a sheet formed by impregnating glass fibers with a polyamide matrix. The sheet for the manufacture of crash-resistant automotive parts contains 6 layers of fibers and a PA6 matrix resin. In the fully automatic SpriForm production process, the cut organic sheet is first preheated in an infrared oven to make it very soft. It is pushed by the robot hand into the injection mold and positioned by the hydraulic needle bar, followed by thermoforming. Then, the glass fiber reinforced polymer melt is injected through the nozzle, and the ribs are molded on the thermoformed part and overmolded on the edge of the molded part.
This technology combines the benefits of both processes in a single manufacturing process to produce lightweight, crash-resistant automotive components. Typical products include seat shells, backs, instrument panel supports, lids, internal bumpers and semi-structures. In addition to the automotive industry, it also has potential for use in aircraft, recreational supplies and agricultural machinery industries.
The SpriForm project is a multi-year cooperation project in Germany. The partners include Audi, Bond Composites, Composites Institute, Jacob Plastics, LANXESS, and KraussMaffei. The goal of the project is to develop a process technology for fabricating complex automotive components from fiber-reinforced composite materials.
