Specifically, its DNA becomes unstable and the chromosomes are often changed—the genes between different chromosomes are exchanged during recombination. This genomic instability in patients with Werner disease can lead to cancer. The patient will be extremely sensitive to a drug that treats cancer, and a very low dose of this drug will also kill fruit flies with similar genetic defects. Researchers say that the principles of the human aging process are not fully understood.
