For instance, on September 28, 2011, a heavy semi-trailer (Yu Henan K6497) caught fire on the Beijing-Shanghai Expressway due to bearing damage that caused brake friction and overheating. Another incident occurred on July 12, 2012, when a low-speed truck (Su NQ2190) caught fire because of an electrical fault near the steering wheel. These incidents highlight the importance of regular vehicle maintenance and awareness of potential fire dangers.

Primary Causes of Car Fires

1. Fire During Driving

Several factors can lead to fires while a vehicle is in motion:

• Damage to the fuel line can cause leaks, which may ignite from sparks or high temperatures.
• Worn-out insulation on electrical wires can result in short circuits and subsequent fires.
• Loose or damaged parts may fall off and ignite nearby combustible materials.
• Items like rags or gloves left near hot engine parts after repairs can catch fire.
• Grass or crops on roads can be sucked into rotating shafts, causing friction and heat that leads to fire.
• Smoking inside the vehicle or improper disposal of cigarette butts can start fires.
• Carrying hazardous chemicals or flammable goods without proper precautions is extremely risky.
• Brake failure can generate excessive heat, potentially igniting tires or surrounding areas.

2. Fire While Parked

When vehicles are parked, fires often occur due to leftover sparks, electrical shorts, or fuel leaks. It’s important to ensure that no flammable items are left unattended and that all systems are properly shut down before parking.

Preventive Measures for Car Fires

To reduce the risk of car fires, the following steps should be taken:

• Before driving, inspect the vehicle thoroughly, especially the electrical and fuel systems, to avoid operating a faulty vehicle.
• If any issues arise during driving, stop safely and address them immediately.
• On roads with dry grass or crops, drive slowly and remain alert to prevent debris from causing friction and heat.
• Never allow passengers to carry dangerous chemicals or flammable items on board.
• When transporting flammable cargo, ensure it is securely covered, and prohibit smoking by all occupants.
• Follow traffic rules strictly to avoid accidents that could lead to fires or explosions.
• Vehicles entering flammable zones must be equipped with flame caps, and any malfunctions should not be repaired on-site.
• Always carry fire-fighting equipment such as extinguishers, fire blankets, and sand.
• Avoid leaving lighters, sprays, or other flammable items in direct sunlight inside the car, especially during hot weather.
